"The satellite dish pictured is a fairly simple shape; however, the measurements to do an accurate geometric re-creation of the model would be rather time-consuming due to the difficulty of measuring the curvature of the interior points on the dish. Accuracy was a concern, as the 3D model would be inter-cut with photos of a real dish.
Instead, a coarse grid was marked on half of the dish, and digitized using the Immersion MicroScribe and 3D Studio MAX. I just used a coarse mesh model of half the dish, which provided an on-screen reference to match spline shapes to. The whole process of the digitizing and dish creation probably took about an hour and a half. The remainder of the detail (mounting post, etc) was done with the standard Max modeling tools."
