I am very impressed with the MicroScribe G2LX and MicroScribe
Connections for Maya. The sculpture I digitized is relatively
small with very fine detail. The face is a little over an inch wide.
Due to the accuracy of the MicroScribe, I am able to negotiate very
intricate features. Taking points feels very natural. The stylus
fits comfortably in my hand and is extremely mobile. The reach of
the MicroScribe is perfect to take any point all the way around
the sculpture.
MicroScribe Connections for Maya is an amazing interface. Maya comes
with a powerful set of tools, and MicroScribe Connections allows
one to take these tools to the next level. Due to the flowing lines
within the sculpture I digitized, I chose to work with NURBS curves.
Because of the visible MicroScribe cursor within Maya, I am able
to take points by either looking at the sculpture or by moving my
stylus while looking at the screen. This is essential, especially
when working with NURBS. Exact point placement, relative to the
other points, is mandatory for accuracy. That is why seeing the
MicroScribe cursor on-screen prior to taking a point is remarkable.
MicroScribe Connections is a great time saver. I can move pivots,
points, and curves in 3D space immediately and exactly. No need
to fumble with awkward and time-consuming mouse positioning. This
feature allowed me to move objects relative to the sculpture I digitized.
I could take the pivot point of a curve, snap it to the cursor's
location, and position it exactly in 3D relative to the sculpture.
I am then free to move and rotate that curve, placing it where it
belongs. Fixing bad points is a snap with the MicroScribe. By touching
the stylus to the appropriate area on the sculpture, I can move
a poorly placed point to a new and better location. Prior to repositioning,
I can immediately get visual feedback on this new location by seeing
where the MicroScribe cursor is on-screen.
I am amazed at the versatility and efficiency of the MicroScribe.
My experience within Maya has been greatly enhanced using MicroScribe
Connections. I am convinced that the MicroScribe will be an invaluable
tool for all Maya projects.
