Results of IEEE Spectrum's November 2007 compilation of patent awards and patent impact ranked Immersion:

  • 1st in Pipeline Originality, ahead of companies such as AT&T, Boeing, Cisco, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Intel, Medtronic, Microsoft, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung, Sony, and Xerox. This is a measure of the variety of technologies on which the company’s patents build.
  • 1st in Pipeline Generality in the Computer Peripherals and Storage category. This is a measure of the variety of technologies drawing on a company’s patents.
  • 2nd in Adjusted Pipeline Impact in the of Computer Peripherals and Storage category. This is a measure of how frequently a company’s patents from the previous five years were cited by other authors’ patents issued in 2006.
  • 5th in its industry category, Computer Peripherals and Storage, and 20th overall compared to the top 180 companies.
  • 46th in Pipeline Power among the more than 1,300 companies in the original dataset.

The report was prepared by 1790 Analytics, a company that specializes in evaluating intellectual property. From a dataset of more than 1,300 companies, IEEE Spectrum selected 9 industry categories and published results of the top 20 companies in each of those industries (180 companies in total).

Immersion was placed in the Computer Peripherals and Storage category with companies including Ricoh, Seiko Epson, Hitachi Global Storage, EMC, Konica Minolta, and Symbol Technologies.
