Adult IV
The Adult IV module supplies six cases and a practice case that exhibit varying
degrees of difficulty and complications. Each case includes simulations
of skin stretch, responses to pain, flashback of blood, and threading
off of the catheter. The module reinforces proper aseptic technique and
medical waste disposal and enhances decision-making skills for site selection
and cleansing, tourniquet placement, and needle gauge selection.
An evaluation report, which can be viewed and printed by the user and
system administrator, is automatically generated for every attempted case.
This report helps monitor user progress and highlights skills that need
improvement. Each simulation is also recorded and can be played back,
providing convenient visual review.
Training Objectives
The user will practice:
- Preparation of the patient for insertion of an intravenous catheter
- Use of proper aseptic technique to minimize nosocomial infections
- Choice of an appropriate site for IV insertion
- Insertion of the cannula (needle and catheter) in the vein (multiple
sites)
- Threading the catheter into the vein and removal of the needle
- Responding to a variety of challenges presented by different patients
Realistic Scenarios
The CathSim system supplies a learning experience that exposes users
to real-world scenarios. Combining software, the AccuTouch® Intravenous
Interface Device, and a PC, the system creates an environment where the
human patient and proxy devices exhibit realistic mass, feel, and natural
reactions such as bleeding and resistance. Users experience the feel of
the needle passing through skin and into the vein. The system's transparency
and side views show the user's angle of approach in real time, adding
an understanding of the underlying anatomy and encouraging excellent technique.
