Pediatric IV

In this module, the user learns to place an IV in the greater saphenous vein of an infant, the dorsal hand/inner wrist of a toddler, the scalp vein of a neonate, and the antecubital vein of a child. The cognitive content addresses issues specific to pediatric IV insertion, emphasizes safety procedures, and reinforces decision-making for tool use — including armboard, EMLA cream, and heel warmer — and their proper sequence. In addition, the module includes a strong psychosocial component, helping users perfect other necessary aspects of patient care.

The module automatically generates an evaluation report every time a user attempts a case. This report can be viewed and printed by the user or system administrator to monitor progress and highlight skills that need to be improved. The simulation is also recorded and can be played back at any time to provide a convenient visual review.

Training Objectives

In the Pediatric Intravenous Catheterization module, the user will:

  • Prepare the pediatric patient and/or family for insertion of an intravenous catheter
  • Learn when proper restraining and immobilization techniques are appropriate
  • Use proper aseptic technique to minimize nosocomial infections
  • Choose an appropriate site for insertion of the intravenous catheter
  • Insert the cannula (needle and catheter) into the vein
  • Thread the catheter into the vein and remove the needle
  • Learn proper dressing and stabilization of the catheter once inserted
  • Respond to a variety of challenges presented by pediatric patients

Realistic Scenarios

The CathSim® system supplies a learning experience that exposes users to real-world scenarios. Combining software, the AccuTouch® Intravenous Interface Device, and a PC, the system creates an environment where the human patient and proxy devices exhibit realistic mass, feel, and natural reactions such as bleeding and resistance. Interaction with the AccuTouch system provides the subtle feel associated with pediatric veins. The system's transparency and side views show the user's angle of approach in real time, adding an understanding of the underlying anatomy and encouraging excellent technique.
