Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters
The Virtual Reality Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICC) system
reviews anatomy, site selection, equipment preparation, and PICC care
while providing a unique, realistic simulation of PICC placement in adult
patients. The entire process is simulated, from venipuncture to the post-insertion
x-ray. Four cases present a range of ages and physical health and allow
left- and right-sided placement in both male and female patients.
An evaluation report is automatically generated every time a user attempts
a case. This report can be viewed, printed, and emailed by the user or
system administrator and helps monitor progress and highlight skills that
need to be improved.
Training Objectives
Using the VR PICC system, the user will:
- Describe patient selection
- Identify relevant anatomy
- Describe and perform simulated anatomical measurements
- Describe and perform simulated site disinfection
- Describe and perform a simulated introducer procedure
- Describe and perform simulated threading
- Identify and describe complications associated with the procedure
Comprehensive Resource
The module provides a comprehensive resource for perfecting the PICC procedure:
- Anatomy overview focuses on the antecubital fossa, axillary, and
central vessels
- Comprehensive step-by-step video tutorials review site selection,
measurements, infection control, device placement, and threading for
PICC placements
- Simulation emphasizes sterile technique and infection control precautions
- Content reviews the identification, prevention, and management of
complications, as well as post-procedure care and radiographic confirmation
Realistic Scenarios
The VR PICC system supplies a learning experience that exposes users
to real-world scenarios. Combining software, a Central Catheter Interface
Device, and a PC, the system creates an environment in which the human
patient and proxy devices exhibit realistic tissue interaction including
bleeding and resistance. The user experiences every step of the PICC procedure:
- Measurement for catheter insertion length
- Disinfection of the introducer site
- Application of digital pressure to stop the bleeding on the introducer
insertion
- Threading of the catheter through an introducer sheath, including
the feel of a real insertion
- Cannulation of the internal jugular (IJ) vein and management of a
malpositioned catheter
- Aspiration using a syringe, confirmation of blood return, and catheter
flushing
PICC Training Classes
Training classes from PICC Excellence combined with the VR PICC system
can be a powerful combination for helping medical professionals develop
their skills. PICC Excellence provides comprehensive cognitive training,
while Immersion Medical's vascular
access medical simulator with PICC insertion module provides hands-on
practice for psycho-motor skills development.
