Sr. Research Scientist

About Immersion:

Immersion’s haptic technology brings the power of touch to billions of devices around the world. With touch, we make people’s digital lives more personal, vivid, and meaningful. Headquartered in San Jose, we work with leading mobile, gaming, wearable, AR/VR, and automotive companies to enhance and revolutionize how users interact with their devices and machine interfaces.

More than ever before, haptics is at the forefront of emerging technologies poised to transform the world. Over 3 billion devices have shipped with our software and IP and we’ve only just begun to tap into the possibilities offered by touch.

We’re a small team and in the early stages of achieving our vision. Come help us lead the haptics revolution.

What we are looking for:

Immersion is seeking a highly motivated and curious Sr. Research Scientist who will help us execute on our goal of creating the world’s best haptic interfaces for mass market products. The successful candidate will be involved in the ideation, design, and development of new haptic rendering algorithms for multimodal interaction systems in virtual/augmented/mixed reality, gaming, wearables, mobile, and automotive. The Sr. Research Scientist will report to the Sr. Manager of Research who oversees the research work on all next-generation technologies.

The successful candidate must have demonstrated experience applying the scientific method to the design and implementation of haptic rendering algorithms. This requires knowledge not only of computer programming, but also the management of hardware peripherals where all haptic rendering algorithms will be displayed and evaluated. A fair understanding of programming multimodal interfaces (audio, visual, haptics) is also required as the ultimate user experience is achieved when combining more than one modality.

The position requires interaction with other teams including user experience (UX), product development groups, and the office of the CTO. A strong team-oriented mindset with a positive and can-do attitude is essential.

What you will do:

  • Develop and implement new haptic rendering algorithms for gaming, XR, mobility, and automotive markets, in collaboration with the creation of cutting edge haptic displays.
  • Create immersive and interactive testing and UX evaluation environments for our haptic devices.
  • Collaborate with other research team members and support product development activities.
  • Work with the Office of the CTO in the development of new standards for haptics, particularly in immersive media.
  • Develop significant specialized knowledge in several areas of haptics.
  • Develop intellectual property of all kinds, including contributing to patent applications.
  • Travel abroad as needed to present your work or to support external innovation activities.

Your Qualifications should include:

  • Ph.D. in Haptics, computer science, robotics, software engineering or related areas
  • 2-3 years of post-degree work in industry or academia
  • Knowledge of haptics and haptic rendering algorithms
  • Strong programming skills in an object-oriented computer language ideally with experience in technology transfer to product teams
  • Experience developing applications using one of the major XR developing platforms (e.g., Oculus, HTC Vive, iOS)
  • Experience developing (VR) applications in a 3D programming engine (e.g., OpenGL, Unreal Engine, Unity 3D)
  • Experience with collaborative research projects
  • Demonstrated innovation record (publications, design awards, patents, etc.)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary groups and alone
  • Ability to travel to the U.S.A., Asia and Europe

Be ready to show examples of the experience required above.

Additional desired skills:

  • 2+ years of experience developing haptic interfaces
  • Knowledge of Machine Learning algorithms, media coding standards, XR platform frameworks
  • UX design experience – Design thinking methodology
