The sway in a turn. The skid of steel-belted tires across wet asphalt. Haptics put users in the driver\u2019s seat in ways that video and audio alone can\u2019t \u2014 and the results are exciting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost auto ads are very visually appealing with beautiful graphics and effects, most of which can easily be accommodated with haptics,\u201d said Kayla Buchanan, one of our haptic designers, when asked about adding a new dimension to car ads.<\/p>\n<p>A recent study by IPG Media Lab, Magna, and Immersion, saw 50% increased brand favorability, 75% increased ad awareness, and 41% increased purchase intent with haptic-enhanced ads over AV alone. That\u2019s because involving more senses leads to higher emotional engagement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDriving is a very physical, very touch-based experience,\u201d said Haptic Designer Tony Agapiou. \u201cAuto ads are probably some of the best ads for haptic design since we can emulate all these sensations \u2014 like the growl of an engine, and even the motion of the car\/truck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10704 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.immersion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/designing-haptics-for-automotive-1.jpg\" alt=\"Designing Haptics For Automotive\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.immersion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/designing-haptics-for-automotive-1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.immersion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/designing-haptics-for-automotive-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.immersion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/designing-haptics-for-automotive-1-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Kayla agreed. \u201cBeing inside a car also has physical aspects. The feel of a road through the steering wheel \u2013 the sensation of shifting gears and being pushed back into your seat when turning or accelerating. All these motions and sensations are perfect for a haptic counterpart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s not about immersing people into the Grand Prix. It\u2019s about creating the right experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead of raw power, an ad for something like a sedan may want to emphasize a sense of luxury. For this, we can recreate the soft purr of an engine and the smoothness of the ride through our design,\u201d Tony explained.<\/p>\n<h2>Peugeot \u201cRumble\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>There\u2019s no one way to design haptics, and there\u2019s no one kind of content that works best. Any brand, in any business, can use haptics to impact more people. But it\u2019s especially adept for auto ads, as we discovered while creating an ad for Peugeot.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10705 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.immersion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/designing-haptics-for-automotive-2.jpg\" alt=\"Designing Haptics For Automotive\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.immersion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/designing-haptics-for-automotive-2.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.immersion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/designing-haptics-for-automotive-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.immersion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/designing-haptics-for-automotive-2-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To produce a choreographic ad called \u201cRumble,\u201d we focused on power and handling. Framing and camera movement showed the car from many angles to accentuate its speed.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, electronic music \u2014 carefully timed to each cut in the video \u2014 also coincided with action in the video. When the driver shifted, so did the music. Haptics drew attention to the choreography and made the viewer feel like he or she was driving the car.<\/p>\n<p>Some automotive brands advertise their touchscreen user interface \u2014 and often the in-car touchscreen already has haptic feedback. There\u2019s no better way to convey the feel of a user interface than to bring the feel directly to consumers through haptic video.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The purr of an engine.
